US, India join forces for English learning

THE US government is working concertedly on setting up a “massive” web-based English language education programme linking the US with 165 other countries, including India. The initiative will also involve forming a “consortium” of US and Indian companies and corporates from other nations.

Subsequently, a higher education council will also be formed between the two democracies to forge across-the-board collaborations between academic institutions.

“The online language programme is going to be a massive exercise,” said Goli Ameri, assistant secretary of state for educational and cultural affairs for the US government. “It is still at a nascent stage and we are examining broader aspects like what shape the consortium will finally take. We have met four to five Indian companies, mainly from the IT sector, in New Delhi. Interactions have also been initiated with some US companies. The English curriculum, one believes, will bring countries closer,” Ms Ameri added.

Dwelling on the planned higher education council, Ms Ameri said the body is in the “exploratory phase.” “Such a council is a first of its kind as far as the US and another country go."

One is now looking forward to partnerships between universities on a broader level. I think thousands of US universities will be interested in such a move,” Ms Ameri said. The council’s functions will gradually be “prioritised”. Ms Ameri has also had discussions at the St Xavier’s College and Techno India College in Kolkata, she said.
